Bio-Siegel is a registered trademark that is also safeguarded by the Eco Labelling Act (External Link Öko-Kennzeichengesetz - only available in German) and the Eco Labelling Regulation (External Link Öko-Kennzeichenverordnung - only available in German). Agricultural produce that comes under the External Link EU Organic Farming Regulation, has not been processed and is intended for human consumption may be labelled with the Bio-Siegel. In processed agricultural produce at least 95 percent of the agricultural ingredients must come from organic farming. The other ingredients of agricultural origin must be listed in Annex VI Part C of the EU Organic Farming Regulation.

Aquaculture products (e.g. fish or algae from fish farming) are not yet within the scope of the EU Organic Farming Regulation. Products from hunting wild animals and from fishing are not subject to the EU Organic Farming Regulation. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic products are not covered by the EU Organic Farming Regulation either. Food with added vitamins or minerals, feeding stuff as well as agricultural products which were produced during a company’s transition to organic farming must not be labelled with the Bio-Siegel.

Use of the Bio-Siegel is voluntary and free of charge. Suppliers do not have to renounce own brand names or eco labels.

Anyone intending to use the Bio-Siegel must notify the Bio-Siegel Information Centre prior to the first use. Notification must be conducted in line with the Eco Labelling Regulation. (More information).
